오세열은 작품을 통해 어린 시절 어떤 제약도 없이 즐겁고 자유로웠던 어린 아이의 무구한 마음을 재현한다. 유화를 여러 겹 두텁게 쌓은 뒤 날카로운 도구로 긁어 내 형상을 표현한다. 그리고 일상 속에서 발견한 오브제를 작품에 콜라쥬 하며 유머와 해학을 환기시킨다. 1984년 프랑스 피악 아트페어 전시 후, 꾸준히 국내외에서 입지를 다져온 오세열 작가는 2020년 파리 개인전을 성공적으로 마치고, 아트 파리, 아트 마이애미 전시를 통해 명성을 높이고 있다.
In his works, Oh Se-Yeol depicts the innocent heart of a child who was happy and free without any restrictions. The oil painting is applied thickly in several layers and then scraped with a sharp tool to express the form. And he expresses humor and wit by inserting some collages from everyday life into his works. Since he exhibited at the Fiac art fair in France in 1984, artist Oh Se-Yeol has continuously established himself at home and abroad. In 2020, he successfully completed his solo exhibition in Paris and is increasing his reputation with exhibitions at Art Paris and Art Miami.

나는 작품을 통해 문명 혹 물질을 넘어 일종의 정신성을 추구한다. 이 정신성은 인간의 순수함에 있다. 마치 아이의 무구한 마음과도 같다. 어떤 제약도 없이 땅에 그리고 벽에 자유롭게 낙서를 했던 어린 시절 말 그대로 즐거웠고 자유로웠다. 작품을 통해 나는 이때의 경험을 되돌리려 한다. 그래서 나에게 작품은 온전히 정신성을 추구하는 일이다. 나 자신을 찾고, 나의 어린 시절을 찾고 또 나의 정체성을 찾는 일이다.

Spirituality goes beyond culture and is present in man’s innocence; it is like the heart of a child. As a child I scribbled freely and innocently everywhere with no constraints. I was quite simply happy and completely free. When I create, I’m always trying to relive this experience, so painting is a veritable spiritual quest for me. I’m in a perpetual quest to find myself, my lost childhood, and my identity.
