오래된 것에 따스함이 있다고 생각하는 성연화는 본인의 가장 ‘평온’하고 ‘안온’했던 시간과 기억을 안료가 스며든 한지를 통해 특유의 따뜻하고 절제된 조형언어로 담아낸다. 갤러리조은 전속작가로서 2023년 12월 한남동 공간에서 첫 개인전을 치른 작가는 2019년 첫 개인전 후 총 9번의 개인전에 초대되며 국내 미술계의 떠오르는 신진작가로 급부상하고 있다. 프랑스, 스페인, 미국 등 다수의 해외 그룹전에 참여했을 뿐만 아니라 2021년 LA 아트쇼, 2022년 포커스 아트페어 파리, 2022년 아트 마이애미에서 전 작품 솔드아웃 되며 해외에서도 뜨거운 관심을 얻고 있다.

Sung Yeon-hwa, who believes that there is warmth in old things, captures her most "peaceful" and "tranquil" times and memories on the pigment-soaked Korean paper Hanji with her unique warm and restrained artistic language. The artist, who had her first solo exhibition in the Hannam-dong space as an exclusive artist at Gallery Joeun in December 2023, has been invited to a total of nine solo exhibitions since her first solo exhibition in 2019 and is quickly becoming an emerging new artist in the Korean art scene. Not only has she participated in a number of group exhibitions in France, Spain and the United States, but all works were sold out at the LA Art Show 2021, Focus Art Fair Paris 2022 and Art Miami 2022, attracting great international interest.

나는 ‘평온’이라는 감정을 시각화하고자, 내가 그 감정을 느끼는 모든 순간과 기억을 시간적으로 담아내고자 했다. 이 작업의 첫 단계는 안온한 기억의 단편들을 공간과 시간의 프레임으로 표현하고, 해당 감정을 화면에 그려내는 것이었다.
작품 속 주재료는 ‘한지’ ‘안료’이다. 한지는 시간이 흐름에 따라 변화하는데, 그 특유의 변화가 따뜻한 감정을 일으키기도 하지만, 동시에 안온한 순간들이 서서히 퇴색되고 사라져가는 느낌을 불러일으키기도 한다. 그래서 나는 안료를 겹겹이 쌓아 올려, 자연스러운 변색을 방지하기 위한 '양의적(兩義的)'인 작업 방식을 선택했다.
어느 순간부터 인가 나는 시간이 나의 소유가 아닌 것 같다는 생각이 들었다. 우리는 현대 사회의 기준과 시간의 흐름에 따라 ‘이끌리는 삶’ ‘순응하는 삶’을 살아가고 있다. "Flow" 시리즈는 나의 시간과 흐름을 존중하고 받아들일 것을 나에게 상기시켜 주는 작품이다. 이는 나에게 주는 위안과 같은 존재다.
나는 아날로그의 미학을 선호한다. 작업방식에도 이것이 현현(顯現)되는데, 파라핀 작업과 한지를 향으로 태우는 방식이다. 이 작업 과정은 자연스럽고 우연적으로 나타난다.
작업에서 나타나는 색채는 모두 자연에서 온다. 가장 자연스러운 시간의 흐름과 함께 주관적인 시각과 감정이 어우러져 표현된다.
결국, 이 모든 작업은 기억의 조각, 자연의 흐름, 그리고 나만의 평온한 시간이다. 이는 아마도 가장 근본적이고도 고요한 경험이며, 나만의 주관적 시각이 관람자들에게 미적 감각을 고무시킬 수 있는 시적 경험이 되기를 바란다.

In order to visualize the feeling of "peace", I have tried to capture all the moments and memories in which I have experienced this feeling. The first step of this work is to express fragments of peaceful memories in spatial and temporal frames and to depict the corresponding feelings on the canvas.

The most important materials in my work are "Hanji" and "Pigment". Hanji changes over time, and its unique changes can evoke warm emotions, but at the same time give a sense of peaceful moments that slowly fade and disappear. Therefore, I chose a "double-modal" working method, applying the pigments in layers to prevent natural discoloration.

At some point, I had the feeling that time was not mine. We live a "managed life" and ‘a "conformist life" with the norms of modern society and the flow of time. The "Flow" series is a work that reminds me to respect and accept my time and my flow. It's like a comfort for me.

I prefer an analog esthetic. This is also reflected in the working method, which consists of working with kerosene and burning Korean paper as incense. This working process is natural and incidental.

All the colors that appear in my works come from nature. Subjective perspectives and emotions are expressed in harmony with the natural flow of time.

Ultimately, all these works are a piece of memory, the flow of nature and my own peaceful time. This is perhaps the most fundamental and tranquil experience, and I hope that my own subjective perspective becomes a poetic experience that can inspire the esthetic sense of viewers.
