권민호는 ‘한국 근현대 풍경화’를 표현하는 작가이다. 현재 우리가 누리는 문화의 기틀이 산업화라고 생각한 작가는 한국 산업화 시대 역사와 미학을 건축 도면의 형태로 압축적으로 표현한다.
연필과 목탄으로 드로잉 한 이미지를 도면 복사기에 넣어 투명한 트레이싱지에 인쇄한다. 그 위에 다른 요소들을 그리거나 덧붙인 뒤 다시 복사하는 방식으로 인쇄와 스캔을 수십 번 반복하여 구조물을 구축하듯 작업을 쌓아 올린다. 공장, 기계, 거리 간판, 콘크리트, 기름때 묻은 쇳덩이 같은 산업화 시대 이미지들이 여러 겹의 레이어로 중첩된다. 때론 곰 인형 모양의 애드벌룬과 같이 한국문화의 ‘귀여움’을 상징하는 요소들이 등장하기도 하는데 이러한 부조화들로 인해 한국 산업화 시대 미학이 가진 복합성과 모순성이 총체적인 방식으로 그 모습을 드러낸다.
“잿빛 콘크리트와 녹슨 철조망, 석유를 담는 시커먼 탱크의 최종 종착지는 화려한 불빛을 뿜으며 우리 삶을 윤택하게 하는 자동차, 건물이고 그 안팎을 채우는 형형색색의 문화였습니다. …… 그 알록달록함만을 잘라 그리는 것이 아니라 그 빛의 근원이 된 기름때 묻은 쇳덩이와 콘크리트를 같이 그리려고 합니다. 내 아버지, 내 친구 아버지가 새 아침에 새벽종을 들으며 구축한 거칠고 냉혹한 틀 위에, 그들의 그림 배운 자식이 재주를 부려 장식을 얹었습니다.”
권민호는 영국 센트럴 세인트 마틴스 예술대학 학사, 영국 왕립예술대학(RCA) 석사과정 졸업 후 국 내외에서 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있다. 드로잉부터, 비디오 인스톨레이션, AR 콘텐츠 그리고 NFT까지 다양한 매체를 넘나들며, 2020년 청주 국립현대미술관 <회색 숨> 개인전에 이어, 2021년 베니스비엔날레 건축전 <미래 학교> 참여까지 국내외 주요 미술 기관의 뜨거운 관심을 한 몸에 받고 있다.
Kwon Min-ho is an artist who expresses "modern and contemporary Korean landscape painting". The artist, who believes that the foundation of our contemporary culture is industrialization, comprehensively expresses the history and aesthetics of the Korean industrialization era in the form of architectural drawings.
The image drawn with pencil and charcoal is printed on transparent tracing paper in a copy machine. By drawing or adding other elements and copying again, the printing and scanning is repeated dozens of times so that the work piles up like a building. Images of the industrial age such as factories, machinery, street signs, concrete and oil-smeared iron overlap in layers. Sometimes elements symbolising the "cuteness" of Korean culture also appear, such as advertising balloons in the shape of teddy bears. These incongruities reveal the complexity and contradictions of Korean industrialization era aesthetics in a holistic way.
"The end goal of the grey concrete, rusty barbed wire, and black oil tanks were cars and buildings that enriched our lives with bright lights and a colourful culture that spread in and out of them. ... I'm not just going to cut away the paint, but draw the oil-smeared iron and concrete that are the source of the light. My father, my friend, put decorations on the rough, cold scaffolding his father had built while listening to the morning bell in the new morning."
After graduating from the University of Arts at Central St. Martins in England and earning a master's degree from the Royal University of Arts (RCA), Kwon Min-ho has continued his active practise at home and abroad. From drawing to video installation to AR and NFT, from the Cheongju National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's solo exhibition in 2020 to participation in the Venice Biennale's architecture exhibition in 2021, he's receiving great attention from major domestic and foreign art institutions.
