갤러리조은은 권민호(b.1979)의 개인전《Calibration Page : 보정 면》을 9월 21일부터 10월 21일까지 개최한다. 권민호는 ‘한국 근현대 풍경화’를 표현하는 작가이다. 현재 우리가 누리는 문화의 기틀이 산업화라고 생각한 작가는 한국 산업화 시대 역사와 미학을 건축 도면의 형태로 압축적으로 표현한다. 공장, 기계, 거리 간판, 콘크리트, 기름때 묻은 쇳덩이 같은 산업화 시대 이미지들이 여러 겹의 레이어로 중첩된다. 완성된 드로잉 작업은 색과 움직임이 더해지며 영상작업의 형태로 표현되기도 한다.

흔히 생각하는 핸드 드로잉과 다르게 권민호의 작업은 복잡하고 기계적인 과정을 거친다. 크로키 용지, 켄트지 그리고 트레이싱지와 같은 다양한 종이 위에 연필, 목탄, 펜 혹은 흑연가루를 이용해 자로 선을 그으며 흑백 드로잉을 완성한다. 그 후 기계식 복사기를 이용해 트레이싱지 위에 이미지를 인쇄한다. 1차로 인쇄된 트레이싱지 위에 다시 그림을 그리고 복사하는데 이 과정을 수십 번 반복하며 구조물을 구축하듯 선들을 쌓아 올린다. 이에 현오아 국립현대미술관 학예사는 권민호 작가가 “드로잉과 더불어 ‘대량생산’이 가능한 인쇄(판화)라는 제작 방식을 통해 작품의 내용뿐만 아니라 형식도 ‘산업화’라는 주제에 일치시키고자 노력해 왔다.”고 평한다.

영국 센트럴 세인트 마틴스 예술대학 학사 그리고 영국 왕립예술대학 석사 졸업 후 꾸준히 현재의 작업 방식을 고수하며 한국의 ‘기계 미학’ 작가로 명성을 쌓은 권민호는 본 전시를 통해 최초로 작업의 프로세스(과정)을 조명해 보는 시간을 가진다. 지난 10년 동안 진행해 온 작업 과정을 분해해 펼치고 각각의 요소를 확대하여 펼쳐낸다. 작업 후 지워내야 했던 보조선들, 떼어내야 했던 마스킹 테이프, 작업 과정에서만 볼 수 있었던 중첩된 이미지들을 나열하듯 전시한다. 본 작업은 10년이라는 작가의 작업 시간에 대한 정리이자 앞으로 새롭게 탄생될 작업을 위한 작가만의 재정렬 작업이라 할 수 있다. 이는 마치 프린터 작업을 새롭게 시작하기 전 뽑아보는 ‘보정 면 Calibration Page’와 같다.

본 전시를 통해 작가는 평소 사용하는 건축용 드로잉 보드 인스톨레이션부터, 드로잉 작업 과정을 그대로 보여주는 트레이싱지 설치 작업, 그리고 3미터에 육박하는 철판 실크스크린 작품까지 다채로운 매체를 통해 본인만의 작업 과정과 방식을 조명할 예정이다.

영국 유학 시절 저우드 드로잉 프라이즈, V&A 일러스트레이션 어워드, 서스테인 RCA 런던 디자인 페스티벌과 같은 유수의 어워드를 수상한 권민호 작가는 2017년 국립현대 “덕수궁 야외프로젝트: 빛 소리 풍경” 전시를 비롯 2019년 문화비축기지탱크4 개인전, 2020년 청주 국립현대미술관 개인전에 이어, 2021년 베니스비엔날레 건축 전시까지 국내외 주요 미술 기관의 뜨거운 관심을 받고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 2020년 MMCA 국립현대미술관, 2020년 인천국제공항, 2022년 용산 역사박물관, 2022년 김중업 건축박물관 등 국내 주요 대형 소장처에 연이어 작품이 소장되며 작가적 기반을 성공적으로 다지고 있다. 올해 10월에는 런던에서 개최되는 Woolwhich Contemporary Print Fair를 통해 총 4점의 에디션 신작을 선보일 예정이다.

Gallery Joeun is pleased to present “Calibration Page," a solo exhibition by Kwon Min-Ho, from September 21 to October 21. Kwon Min-Ho is an artist who expresses "modern and contemporary Korean landscape drawing" The artist, who considers industrialization as the foundation of contemporary Korean culture, depicts the history and esthetics of Korean industrialization through compressed architectural drawings. Images from the Korean industrial era such as factories, machinery, street signs, concrete, and oil-smeared iron are layered. Sometimes color and movement are added to the finished drawing to turn it into a moving image.

Unlike conventional hand drawing, Kwon Min-ho's drawing work is a complex and mechanical process. He draws black and white lines with a ruler on various papers, such as croquis paper, Kent paper, and tracing paper. The image is then printed on the tracing paper using a mechanical copying machine. The artist draws again on the tracing paper that was printed first and copies, and this process is repeated dozens of times to stack the lines like a structure. Hyun Oh-ah, curator at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Korea, commented, “By adding printing processes to the drawing that enable mass production, he has extended the theme of industrialization beyond the content of his work to his style."

Kwon Min-ho, who has continued this way of working continuously after graduating from Central St. Martins College of Art and the Royal College of Art in the United Kingdom, is known as a mechanical-esthetic artist, and with this exhibition he finally takes the time to shed light on his working process for the first time. He dissects and unfolds the working process that has taken place over the last 10 years, expanding and unfolding each element. He intentionally shows auxiliary lines that had to be erased after the work was done, tape that had to be removed, and overlapping images that could only be seen during the working process. We can say that this work is a kind of summary of the artist's ten years of work, and a reorganization of the artist for the new works that will be created in the future. It is like a 'calibration page' that is pulled out before the start of a new print job.

The exhibition focuses on the artist's working method and process, using a variety of media: The drawing board used by the artist, a tracing paper installation through which the visitor can see his working process of drawing, and large-scale silkscreen prints.

Winner of prestigious awards such as Jerwood Drawing Prize, V&A Illustration Award and Sustain RCA London Design Festival, Kwon Min-ho has continued his active exhibition activities, starting with the exhibition at Deoksugung Outdoor Project in 2017, solo exhibition at Oil Tank Culture Park Tank 4 in 2019, solo exhibition at Cheongju National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art to participation in Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021, and is represented in major domestic collections such as National Museum of Modern Arts (2020), Incheon International Airport (2020), Yongsan History Museum (2022), and Kim Chung-up Architecture Museum (2022). This year, a total of 4 new editions will be unveiled at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in London in October.
