삶이 곧 작업의 근간인 이재현(b.1979)은 유년 시절 기억부터 어른이 된 오늘날까지 작가의 삶에 들어온 의미 있는 사람들과 사물들을 특유의 조형 언어로 풀어낸다. 임파스토(Impasto) 기법으로 표현된 회화의 투박한 질감과 인물들의 익살스러운 표정, 다채로우면서 동시에 시간이 바랜 듯한 색채감이 특징적이다. 2023년 파리 팝업 개인전, 갤러리조은 개인전 그리고 화이트스톤 서울 개관전을 치르며 성공적 행보를 이어 나가고 있다.

Lee Jae-Hyun, whose life forms the basis for his work, unravels meaningful people and objects that have entered the artist's life, from childhood memories to the present as an adult, in his unique artistic language. Characteristic are the rough texture of the painting, expressed through the impasto technique, the humorous expressions of the figures and the bright but faded colors over time. He continues his successful career with a pop-up exhibition in Paris in 2023, a solo exhibition at Gallery Joeun and the inaugural exhibition at Whitestone Seoul.

이재현 작가는 유년시절의 기억과 과거의 추억을 소환하는 반복적인 과정을 자신만의 시각언어로 표현하는 작가이다. 작가의 캔버스 속에는 냉소적으로 보이는 표정의 인물과 작가에게 의미 있는 대상들이 다양한 색채와 함께 임파스토 기법으로 표현된다. 작가는 건축을 공부하였으며 2007년부터 조각 작업을 시작하였다. 공존, 공생의 의미가 내포된 사람과 동물의 형상을 우드, 세라믹, 메탈 등 다양한 소재로 입체작업을 시도했다. 작가는 2018년부터 재료의 범위를 확장하여 페인팅으로 작업을 발전시킨 후 자신만의 조형언어를 캔버스에 담아왔다. 이재현 작가의 작업에서 보이는 특징은 평면 회화이지만 입체적인 마티에르(matière)가 두드러지며, 묘사된 대상의 다변성(多辯性)을 추구한다. 이는 10여 년간 수행해온 작가의 조각 작업이 바탕이 된 결과물이라고 할 수 있다. 캔버스에 부조를 적용하기 위해 다양한 재료의 특성에 대한 고민과 반복적인 실험을 통해 지금의 독창적인 화풍과 함께 작가만의 조형 언어를 구축할 수 있었다.

작가의 작업의 원천은 ‘과거의 기억’이다. 과거의 기억은 현재를 바라보는 기준이 되며 작품에 주로 등장하는 인물과 다양한 오브제들은 과거의 기억과 현재를 바라보는 작가의 시선이 혼합된 결과물이라고 할 수 있다. 작가의 캔버스 속에서 독창적인 모습을 하고 있는 다양한 대상들은 작가의 과거, 추억과 현실을 넘나들며 캔버스 속에서 새로운 이야기로 등장한다. 작가는 작품이 내포하고 있는 메시지들을 일부 관객의 몫으로 남겨 두었다. 이는 감상자에게 궁금증을 자아내며 작가의 작품에 더 몰입하게 되는 매력적인 요소로 다가온다. 작가는 일부 작품의 해석을 관객들의 몫으로 남겨둠으로써 관객들에게 각자의 기억과 추억을 작가의 그림을 통해 한 번 더 상기시키며 다양한 감정과 생각을 사유하도록 유도한다.


Lee is an artist known for his distinctive style of expressing the memories of his childhood and past in his own visual language. A series of fascinating paintings depicting cynical-looking figures and meaningful objects with a striking multi-color impasto technique will leave a lasting impression on the audience. After studying architecture in college, Lee shifted to sculpting and stepped into the world of art in 2007. He created a series of stunning human and animal sculptures made of different materials such as wood, ceramic, and metals under the overarching themes of coexistence and symbiosis. Since 2018, the artist has expanded the variety of materials used in his artwork and broadened his horizon into paintings by expressing his own formative language on canvas. The artist has a knack for applying a 3D texture to his paintings, and bringing out the versatility of objects, making the best use of matière. With over 10 years of sculpting experience, Lee developed his signature style and technique of painting after exploring different properties of a wide range materials in an endless attempt to incorporate relief sculpture into painting.

The “memories of the past” are the main sources of inspiration to the artist. The past memories form the basis of how the artist views the present, and a number of human figures and objects which frequently appear in his paintings demonstrate how his perspectives on the past memories and the present moment are blended together. In Lee’s paintings, various objects that have a unique appearance help the artist tell fresh stories transcending time on his childhood memories. The artist draws the audience in and evokes their curiosity to provide them a fully-immersive experience by leaving interpretation of his work to the audience. It invites the audience to recall their own memories of the past and contemplate on their innermost thoughts and feelings through Lee’s paintings.
