갤러리조은은 마이코 코바야시(b.1977)의 개인전《Portrait of My Thoughts 내 사유의 초상화》를 11월 22일부터 12월 17일까지 개최한다. 마이코 코바야시는 토끼, 개 혹은 고양이를 연상시키는 생명체들의 초상화를 특유의 조형 언어로 표현한다.

작가가 표현하는 생명체들은 귀여우면서 어딘지 서글프다. 지극히 개인적이고 소소한 감정들이 은밀하면서 조심스럽게 드러난다. 명확히 규정짓기 힘든 이 표정은 여러 뉘앙스의 복잡하고 내밀한 우리네 인간의 표정과 같다. 박영택 비술 평론가는 “인간이 짓고 있는 지극히 사적인 표정을 인간과 유사한 캐릭터가 대리하고 있다”고 말한다.

그림을 보는 관객들은 이 생명체들의 표정에 자신의 마음을 대입하고 공감대를 형성한다. 현대 사회 속 고독한 개인들이 겪는 삶의 크고 작은 희로애락을 상상해 본다. 이에 박영택은 “명료하게 설명할 수 없는 미묘한 감정의 얼룩들이 단순하고 무심하게 내려앉은 화면은 자기 안에서 겪는 모순된 감정의 마찰과 여러 상처를, 무력감과 생의 의지 사이의 갈등을 온전히, 스스로 견디듯 간직해야 하는 것이 우리들 개인이라는 사실을 새삼 환기시킨다”고 평한다. 작가는 이름도, 나이도, 성도 존재하지 않는 이 생명체들을 통해 문화, 인종, 언어를 초월하여 모든 인간이 느끼고 공감할 수 있는 감정들을 표현하려 노력한다.

이 감정들은 오롯이 작가의 손에 의해 만들어진다. 일본 사가현에서 핸드메이드로 제작한 와시和紙 페이퍼(일본 전통 닥종이)를 캔버스 혹 우드 판넬에 덧붙인 뒤 아크릴, 오일 파스텔, 컬러 펜슬을 사용해 생명체를 표현한다. 2015년부터 작가는 모든 그림에 와시 페이퍼를 사용하는데, 얇지만 강하고 질긴 와시 페이퍼의 재료적 질감이 부서질 듯 연약하면서도 강한 생명력을 가진 인간의 본질과 닮아 있다. 작가는 세상에서 오는 무력감과 절망감에도 불구하고 어떤 상황에서도 결코 사라지지 않는 “인간의 본질적 생명력”이 예술과 삶에 대한 동력이라 고백한다.

마이코 코바야시는 일본 무사시노 미대 Musashino Art University 학사, 영국 노섬브리아 미대Northumbria University 석사 졸업 후 유럽과 아시아, 미국을 오가며 20년 동안 활발한 작품 활동을 이어오고 있다. 2021년 홍콩 소더비 첫 경매에서 4호 소품이 홍콩달러HKD 126,000으로 거래되며 미술계의 떠오르는 스타로 급 부상했다.

한국에서 열리는 작가의 첫 개인전을 통해 120호 대형 캔버스 작품부터, 드로잉, 판화 소품까지 22점의 다채로운 신작을 선보일 예정이다.

Gallery Joeun is pleased to present the solo exhibition "Portrait of My Thoughts" by Maiko Kobayashi (b.1977) from November 22 to December 17, 2022. Maiko Kobayashi depicts portraits of creatures reminiscent of rabbits, dogs or cats in her unique artistic language.

The creatures the artist depicts seem familiar yet strange, endearing yet sad. Very personal and trivial emotions are secretly and carefully revealed. This hard-to-define expression resembles the complex and inner expression of our human nature in various nuances. Art critic Park Young-Taek says, "A human-like figure represents the extremely private expression of man."

Viewers can also empathize with the psychological situation of the figures. And they imagine the inevitable emotional ups and downs that life brings for lonely people in modern society. Park Young-Taek commented, "Her work simply and unintentionally brings out patches of tender feelings that cannot be clearly explained, reminding viewers that they must endure and nurture the conflicts and scars of conflicting emotions and the inner struggles between helplessness and the will to live." With these creatures, which have no name, age or gender, the artist wants to express feelings that all people, regardless of culture, race or language, can feel and relate to.

These feelings are created solely by the artist's hands. Washi paper, handmade in Saga Prefecture, Japan, is applied to a canvas or wooden panel to depict the creatures using acrylic, oil pastel and color pencils. Since 2015, the artist has used Washi paper for all paintings, which resembles the essence of a human being with fragile yet strong vitality, as if the material nature of the thin, strong and tough paper matters. The artist confesses that despite the helplessness and despair emanating from the world, the "essential vitality of man", which does not disappear under any circumstances, is the driving force for art and life.

After graduating from Musashino Art University in Japan and Northumbria University in Northumbria, UK, Maiko Kobayashi has been working in Europe, Asia and the US for 20 years. At Sotheby's in Hong Kong, her small work fetched a price of HKD 126,000 in 2021 and quickly became a rising star in the art world.

The artist's first solo exhibition in Korea features 22 new works ranging from large canvas works to drawings and engravings.
