갤러리조은은 승연례(b.1949)의 개인전 《Blooming》을 9월 14일부터 10월 5일까지 개최한다. 풍성한 잎을 드리우며 바람을 타고 흔들리는 야자수의 다채로운 자태를 작가만의 독창적 조형 언어로 풀어낸다.

미국 샌디에고 여행 당시 2층 방 창문 너머 열매를 풍성히 드리운 야자수의 싱싱한 생명력에 매료된 작가는 한국에 돌아온 이후 줄곧 야자수를 그린다. 야자수 잎 사이, 가지 사이에 언제나 크고 작은 바람이 스쳐 지나간다. 작가의 작품 안에서 야자수들은 미풍에 살랑이기도 하고 강풍에 둥치가 부러질 듯 휘어지기도 한다.

유연하면서 강한 야자수의 자태는 작가의 드로잉 기법에서도 찾을 수 있다. 크레용이라는 재료로 선과 면을 혼용하여 작업 전체를 풍부하게 만든다. 그녀의 크레용 기법은 힘의 강약에 따라 색의 농담과 기운생동을 느낄 수 있는 수묵화를 연상케 한다. 오랜 세월 쥐고 그려온 붓과 같이 그 움직임과 표현이 작가 승연례와 일체 되어 움직인다.

식물에 대한 애정이 남달랐던 작가는 푸른 빛 야생화 오랑캐꽃을 보고 오랜 공백을 딛고 작품 활동을 재개한다. 오랜 시간 평범한 일상에 내재한 영감이 에너지가 되어 작업에 고스란히 담긴다. 꽃과 나무 같은 식물에서 느끼는 감수성은 승연례 작가 본질의 표현일 것이다. 이에 정종효 부산시립미술관 학예실장은 “드로잉은 작가 삶의 본질에 대한 표현이며, 내적인 자아와 외적인 자아의 소통 수단”이라 말한다. 바람을 타고 흔들리는 야자수의 유연하면서 강인한 자태는 작가 승연례의 초월적 표현 그 자체일 것이다.

최근 작가는 크레용 드로잉 작업에 이어 캔버스에 평붓으로 기법을 과감하게 확대해 나가고 있다. 이번 전시를 통해 하늘빛을 머금은 싱그러운 대형 야자수부터, 황혼 녘 붉은 물결의 야자수까지 다채로운 서사를 간직한 약 40여 점의 야자수 신작을 선보일 예정이다.

Gallery Joeun is pleased to present the solo exhibition "Blooming" by Seung Yun-Ray (b. 1949) from September 14 to October 5, 2022. The colorful appearance of palm trees swaying in the wind with abundant leaves is depicted in the artist's unique artistic language.

During her trip to San Diego, the artist was fascinated by the fresh vitality of the palm trees bearing fruit behind the second floor window, and has continued to draw palm trees since her return to Korea. Between the palm leaves and branches, winds large and small are constantly blowing. In the artist's works, the palm trees sometimes sway in the breeze and sometimes bend, as if their trunks were being broken by strong winds.

The characteristic of the flexible and strong palm tree is also found in the artist's drawing technique. The entire work is enriched by the mixing of lines and shapes with colored pencils. Her colored pencil technique is reminiscent of traditional Korean ink painting, where you can feel the esprit of the colors and the vitality of the energy depending on the strength and weakness of the force. Like a brush that has been wielded for many years, its movements and expressions move in unison with the artist Seung Yun-Ray.

The artist, who had a special fondness for plants, sees blue wildflowers and resumes her work after a long hiatus. The inspiration, long inherent in ordinary everyday life, becomes an energy that is reflected in her works. The sensitivity expressed in plants such as flowers and trees can be an expression of the artist Seung Yun-Ray's essence. Cheong Jong-Hyo, chief curator of the Busan Art Museum, says, "Drawing is an expression of the artist's essence and a means of communication between the inner and outer self." The pliable and strong quality of the palm swaying in the wind could be a transcendent expression of the artist Seung Yun-Ray herself.

Recently, the artist, who had previously drawn with colored pencils, has boldly expanded her technique with the broad wash brush on canvas. In this exhibition, there are about 40 new palms with different motifs, from fresh large palms with sky colors to palms with red waves at dusk.
