갤러리조은은 윤상윤의 개인전 《Gram Gram》을 7월 26일부터 8월 20일까지 개최한다. ‘중력에서 벗어난 존재’를 주제로 현실과 환영이 혼재된 세계를 작가만의 독창적 조형 언어로 풀어낸다.

영화 촬영 현장과 같은 작가의 작품에서 등장인물은 중력을 잊은 듯 하늘을 날아다니고 타잔처럼 이리저리 흔들리며 세상을 횡단한다. 현실과 닮아 있지만, 현실 그 어디에서도 찾아볼 수 없는 환영의 풍경이다.

오른손과 왼손 양손 작가로 잘 알려진 윤상윤은 마치 두 명의 화가가 그린 것처럼 각각 다른 두 세계를 발전시켜왔다. 개인과 집단 그리고 초자아라는 3단 구조를 가진 오른손 회화가 의도적이고, 계획적이면 다듬어지지 않은 불규칙한 선으로 이루어진 왼손 회화는 무의식의 영역을 표현한다.

표현방식에서도 오른손 회화가 르네상스 시대 글레이징 기법으로 흑백으로 음영을 잡고 색을 엷게 수십 번 칠하며 건축적 구조로 작품을 완성한다면, 자동기술적 드로잉에 가까운 왼손 회화는 임파스토 기법의 즉흥적인 브러쉬 스트로크로 화면을 구성한다. 학습되고 길들여진 오른손이 문명과 문화를 상징한다면, 날것의 자유분방한 왼손은 야생과 본능을 상징한다.

이제껏 서로 대비되고 충돌했던 두 세계가 이번 전시를 통해 작품 안에서 서로 공존하며 혼재된다. 이를 두고 김노암 미술비평가는 “마치 마술사의 트릭처럼 두 세계의 환영을 번갈아 가며 우리 앞에 펼쳐 보이는 것 같다”고 말한다. 작가에게 왼손 오른손이 중요한 게 아니다. 현실을 닮은 듯하지만, 현실 어디에도 찾을 수 없는 장소의 풍경, 시대, 인간군상을 통해, “당신의 진짜 세계는 어디에 있는지 골라보라는 듯” 우리네 존재의 의미에 대해 질문을 던진다.

영국 첼시 예술 대학교에서 페인팅 학사 석사과정을 마친 윤상윤 작가는 2012년 제1회 종근당 예술 지상, 2019년 호반 문화재단 청년 작가 대상을 수상하며 한국과 홍콩, 유럽에서 활발한 활동을 이어오고 있다.

테니스, 축구, 골프 같은 스포츠와 영화 촬영 현장을 연상시키는 작품까지 다채로운 주제로 이루어진 34점의 신작을 통해 관객들에게 현실과 판타지가 혼재된 독특한 풍경을 선사할 예정이다.

Gallery Joeun is pleased to present a solo exhibition by artist Yoon Sang-Yoon, Gram Gram, from July 26 through August 20. With the theme of "Being outside of gravity", the artist presents a mixed world of reality and illusion using his own artistic language.

Like a movie scene, people fly away, forgetting gravity while traversing the world. This landscape of illusion reflects reality, but is not set in the real world.

The artist, known for using both hands, develops both worlds. The image from the right hand consists of three structures: the individual, the collective, and the superego and is conscious and deliberate, while the image from the left hand, with its irregular lines, reflects the world of the subconscious.

As for the technique, the right hand utilizes a glazing technique. It consists of several thin layers on a black and white background. The left hand, whose technique is reminiscent of automatic writing, presents the image with free and immediate brushstrokes. The well-formed right hand represents civilization and culture, while the distorted and free left hand stands for wildness and intuition.

These two ambivalent and contradictory worlds coexist and merge in the same universe. Art critic Kim No Am commented that the illusions of the two worlds were being performed alternately, like a magic trick. For the artist, left or right is not important. Through these landscapes, times, and people existing in the real world and illusion, he asks questions about our existence and choosing where our real world is.

A graduate of Chelsea College License and Master, he was awarded the Chong Kun Dang Artist Award in 2012 and the HOBAN Foundation Grand Prize in 2019. He continues to exhibit in Korea, Hong Kong, and Europe actively.

In this exhibition, 34 new works on various themes, such as sports - tennis, soccer, or golf - and landscapes reminiscent of movie scenes invite viewers into an original and fantastic world.
