갤러리조은은 모제 아세프자Mojé Assefjah(b.1970, 테헤란)의 개인전 《I Can Still Feel The Breeze》를 3월 30일부터 5월 6일까지 개최한다. ‘창문을 열고 바라본 자연’을 주제로 마치 꿈을 꾸는 듯한 풍경들을 작가만의 자유롭지만 절제된 조형 언어로 풀어낸다.

고국인 이란을 떠나 독일로 귀화한 작가가 18년 만에 테헤란을 다시 방문했을 때 만년설로 유명한 엘부르즈산맥의 아름다운 절경을 마주한다. 어린 시절 테헤란에 살았을 때 마치 산이 안아주는 느낌을 받았던 작가는 창문을 열었을 때 보이는 풍경에 우리의 인지 영역이 확장되는 경험을 하게 된다. 작가에게 작품은 하나의 풍경이자 뷰다. 마치 열려 있는 창문을 통해 그리운 장소를 보는 것과 같다.

르네상스 시대부터 그림은 세계를 향해 ‘열린 창문’이다. 조토Giotto, 피에로 델라 프란체스카Piero della Francesca 같은 대가들에게 영향을 받은 작가는 르네상스 미술에 관한 관심을 기술적 연구로까지 확장한다. 작가는 천연안료에 계란과 물, 아마인유를 섞은 ‘에그 템페라’ 기법을 고수한다. 에그 템페라로 드러난 색채는 매트 하면서 부드러운 광택을 드리운다. 얇은 레이어들이 유기적으로 쌓이며 투명하면서 불투명하고, 밝으면서 어둡고, 따뜻하면서 차가운 바디감을 만들어낸다.

여러겹으로 쌓인 색과 형태는 마치 직물 같은 텍스쳐를 가진다. 자유로운 붓의 제스츄얼이 스스로 거대한 곡선 형태를 만들어 내며 풍성한 리본 혹은 직물의 드레이프 형태를 만들어 낸다. 고대 페르시아 캘리그래피에 영향을 받은 모제의 브러쉬 스트로크는 춤을 추는 듯 가볍고 리드미컬 하다.

미술사학자 안-마리 보네는 작가의 작품에 대해, « 마치 발레 댄서가 관중으로 하여금 본인의 육체적 노력과 땀을 잊게 하면서 우아함과 ‘존재의 가벼움’을 만드는 것 »과 같다고 평한다. 하지만 가벼움은 일시적이다. 투명하면서도 불투명하고, 가까우면서도 먼 작가의 작품은 오래 보면 볼수록 한층 더 복합적인 모습으로 그 깊이감을 드러낸다. 이에 그녀는 작가의 작품을 « 존재의 깊이를 짐작게 하는 수사학 »이라 평한다.

국내에 처음으로 소개되는 모제 아세프자는 독일 뮌헨 미술대학에서 회화를 전공한 뒤, 유럽 및 중동 아시아에서 활발한 전시를 이어가고 있다. 2021년 아트파리Art Paris 솔로쇼, 2022년 블루 라이더Blue Rider(청기사파) 세계 최대 소장처인 독일 뮌헨 렌바흐하우스Lenbachhaus 뮤지엄에 작품이 소장되면서 유럽미술계의 뜨거운 관심을 받고 있다.

2미터 대형 에그 템페라 작품부터 서예를 연상시키는 드로잉까지 추상과 구상을 오가는 23점의 작품들이 관객들에게 꿈꾸듯 그리운 풍경들을 선사할 예정이다.

Gallery Joeun is pleased to present "I Can Still Feel The Breeze", a solo exhibition by Mojé Assefjah (b. 1970, Tehran), from March 30th to May 6th. Nature seen through the window is depicted like a dreamscape between figuration and abstraction.

When the artist, who left her country, Iran, to become a German citizen, returned to Tehran 18 years later, she was confronted with the beauty of the Alborz Mountains. When she was a child living in Tehran, she had felt embraced by the mountains and her perception was broadened by the landscape she had seen through the window. For the artist, the painting is a scene and a view. It is like looking into a nostalgic space.

Since the Renaissance, painting has been an open window to the world. Influenced by masters such as Giotto and Piero della Francesca, the artist has deepened her passion for Renaissance art and even explored the technique. She insists on using egg tempera as a technique. The color achieved with egg tempera is both matte and satin. The thin layers overlap in an organic way, giving the paint a dialectical texture, both transparent and opaque, light and dark, warm and cold.

The layered colors and shapes exude a physical texture reminiscent of textiles. The free brushstrokes create their own curves, like the shape of a voluminous ribbon or the drape of fabric. Moje's brushstrokes, influenced by traditional Persian calligraphy, are light and rhythmic like a dance.

Art historian Anne-Marie Bonnet compares her work to "the way a ballet dancer's solo makes the viewer forget the discipline and sheer physical effort involved, creating instead a sensation of grace and 'lightness of being.'" However, the lightness is immediate: "As one stares longer, the complexity and possible depth become apparent." She then considers her work "the rhetoric of the fathoming of another existence."

The artist, who is being presented in Korea for the first time, has a degree in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and has subsequently had numerous exhibitions throughout Europe and Central Asia. After successive events such as her solo exhibition Art Paris 2021 and her exhibition at the Lenbachhaus Museum in Munich in 2022 and inclusion in its collection, which houses the largest collection of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), she is considered one of the most up-and-coming artists in Europe.

From a 2-meter-long work in egg tempera to a drawing reminiscent of calligraphy strokes, 23 of her recent works offer viewers nostalgic and dreamy landscapes.
