현대 사회는 끊임없이 삶의 기준을 제시하며, 우리가 그 틀 안에서 안주하도록 유도한다. 우리는 때로 자신만의 방향성과 자유를 포기한 채, 주어진 서사 속에서 살아가고 있음을 깨닫지 못한다. 그러나 삶의 진정한 가치는 그 틀을 벗어난 순간에서 발견된다.
나의 작업은 이러한 고민에서 출발한다. 나는 세상과 나 사이에 존재하는 관계를 탐구하고, 이를 시각적으로 풀어내기 위해 ‘천’을 선택했다. 천은 시간의 흔적을 간직한 재료이자, 자유롭고 무한한 가능성을 지닌 도구다. 나는 이 작업을 "패브릭 드로잉 Fabric Drawing ", 즉 ‘천으로 그리는 회화’라 부른다.
패브릭 드로잉은 단순히 천을 사용하는 작업이 아니다. 천을 자르고, 겹치고, 엮어가며 만들어지는 레이어는 단순한 중첩이 아니라, 서로 다른 요소들이 만나 새로운 조화를 만들어내는 과정이다. 천은 힘을 가하면 늘어나고, 겹쳐지며 반투명한 색과 질감으로 새롭게 변한다. 이러한 중첩된 레이어는 조화와 대조를 만들어내며, 또 다른 화면을 형성한다. 색은 내 작업에서 중요한 역할을 한다. 천은 물감처럼 색을 직접적으로 섞을 수 없지만, 여러 레이어를 통해 예상치 못했던 새로운 색과 질감을 만들어낸다. 어울리지 않을 것 같은 색의 조합도 천에서는 가장 아름다운 조화를 만들어내곤 한다. 색은 혼자 존재하지 않고, 서로의 역할 속에서 조화와 대조를 이루며 더 큰 의미를 만들어낸다. 이것은 우리가 살아가는 삶과도 닮아 있다.
천의 질감과 색은 작업 과정에서 끊임없는 발견의 즐거움을 선사하며, 나에게 천은 단순한 재료를 넘어 하나의 언어로 다가온다. 이를 통해 나는 시간의 흔적, 공간의 무게, 그리고 관계의 복잡성을 시각적으로 풀어낸다. 나의 작업은 평면에 머무르지 않고, 공간으로 확장된다. 건축적 공간에서 설치된 작업은 관객과 작품이 물리적으로 교감할 수 있는 장을 만들어낸다. 이 교감은 단순한 시각적 경험을 넘어, 관객이 자신의 기억과 감정을 탐구하도록 유도한다. 작업은 질문을 던지고, 관객이 스스로의 답을 찾아가는 과정을 열어준다. 패브릭 드로잉은 단순히 아름다움이나 완결성을 추구하지 않는다. 그것은 불완전함 속에서 발견되는 가능성, 조화와 대조가 공존하는 과정, 그리고 끝없는 탐구의 여정을 담고 있다. 시간의 흔적을 품은 천은 내 작업 속에서 우리가 잃어가고 있는 상상력과 자유를 다시 날아오를 가능성으로 이야기한다.
결국, 나의 작업은 우리가 살아가는 관계 속에서 발견되는 조화를 이야기한다. 보이지않는 가능성을 찾아내고, 그것을 시각적으로 드러내는 시도. 이것이 내가 천을 매개로 세상과 대화하며 만들어가는 언어다.
아티스트 스테이트먼트 2025
Modern society relentlessly presents standards of life, guiding us to conform and settle within its frameworks. At times, we fail to realize that we are living within these predefined boundaries, having abandoned our own sense of direction and challenges. Yet, the true value of life is often discovered in moments when we break free from these constraints.
My work stems from this reflection. I explore the relationship between the world and myself, expressing it visually through the medium of fabric. Fabric holds traces of cultural history and the passage of time, serving as a material rich in freedom and infinite possibilities. I call this practice "Fabric Drawing ," a form of painting with fabric.
Fabric Drawing is not simply about using fabric as a material. Cutting, layering, and weaving fabric creates layers that are not mere physical overlaps but a meeting of different languages, forming new harmonies. Fabric stretches, overlaps, and transforms, with textures ranging from firm leather to translucent layers undergoing changes. These layered compositions create contrasts and harmonies, forming entirely new visual landscapes.
Color plays a pivotal role in my work. Unlike paint, fabric cannot mix colors directly, yet the layering process gives birth to unexpected hues and textures. Combinations of colors that might seem discordant often produce the most striking harmonies within the fabric. Colors do not exist in isolation; they find deeper meaning through their roles in creating balance and contrast. This resonates with the way we navigate life itself.
The textures and colors of fabric provide endless moments of discovery during the creative process. To me, fabric is not merely a material but a language through which I can visually articulate traces of time, the weight of space, and the complexities of relationships.
My work transcends the flat plane, expanding into spatial dimensions. When installed within architectural spaces, it creates an interactive field where viewers can physically and emotionally engage with the artwork. This interaction goes beyond a visual experience, inviting the audience to reflect on their own memories and emotions. The work poses questions and opens up a journey for viewers to find their own answers.
Fabric Drawing does not pursue mere beauty or completeness. It embraces the possibilities found within imperfection, the coexistence of harmony and contrast, and the ongoing journey of exploration. Fabric, imbued with traces of time, serves as a medium through which I seek to revive the imagination and freedom we are gradually losing.
Ultimately, my work tells stories of the harmony found within relationships, both visibleand invisible. It seeks to uncover hidden possibilities and bring them to light through visual expression. This is the language I craft through fabric as I engage in a dialogue with the world.
