어둑한 작업실의 한 구석에서 창문을 통해 들어오는 광선이 사물을 비추는 순간, 17세기 화가 렘브란트는 그윽한 존재감에 몸부림 쳤을 것이다. 기원전 15000전 알타미라나 라스코의 동굴에 비친 희미한 광선으로부터, 빛이 너무 좋아서 이젤을 들고 저 찬란한 태양빛 속으로 뛰어 나갔던 모네, 이글거리는 대지며 밤하늘의 별들, 해바라기와 들판의 향나무, 자신의 얼굴조차 불꽃으로 일렁이게 했던 고흐를 지나 현재에 이르는 미술은 빛의 역사가 아니었는가?
나의 작품은 빛이다. 작품을 완성하기 위해 빛을 도입하는 것이 아니라 빛 그 자체가 재료이자 기법이며 표현이다. 빛을 그려내는 것이 아니라 빛이 머물 수 있도록 하는 것이다.
인간은 하나의 빛이다. 그들의 문화도, 그들이 이루어나가는 역사도 또 그들이 영위하는 삶도 빛인 것이다.
빛은 사물에 앞서는 것이다.
나는 요즈음 스테인레스 스틸을 사용한다. 스테인리스 스틸은 차갑다. 냉철하다. 그리고 순수하다. 나는 그 차갑고 단단함이 좋다. 도시적이며 현대적이고 지적이다. 나는 뜨거움을 나타내기 위하여 차가운 금속을 사용한다.
우선 제작과정을 살펴보자. 우선 스테인레스 스틸 판재를 미러 가공한다. 미러 가공을 통하여 스테인리스 스틸은 더욱 차가운 평명과 투명함을 지닌 거울효과를 나타내게 된다. 이것들을 오려내어 유닛을 만든다. 만들어진 유닛을 햄머링한다. 길고 지루한 시간이 흐른다. 스테인리스 스틸의 표면에 반사되던 단단한 빛들은 햄머링 소리와 함께 깨지고 부서지며 빛을 산란시키기 시작한다. 드디어 빛이 춤을 추는 순간이다. 끊임없이 반복되는 순간이다. 지루한 시간을 보내고 서야 비로소 수천 개의 유닛들이 준비되어 진다. 이렇게 만들어진 스테인리스 스틸 유닛들은 나에게 있어서 하나의 안료이자 물감 덩어리인 것이다. 수 천 개의 그것들이 하나하나 캔버스 위에 부착되는 순간 차가운 쇠의 성질은 사라지고 뜨겁고 황홀한 일루젼이 된다. 타들어가는 석양이 그렇듯, 물질에서 이미지로 바뀌는 순간이다. 그래서 나의 작품은 본질적으로 회화이다. 스테인리스 스틸 유닛이 하나하나 캔버스에 부착되는 순간, 오랜 시간 잘 갈아진 먹물을 흠뻑 적신 붓으로 화선지 위에 일획을 그어 내리는 희열을 맛본다. 화선지 위의 먹이 발묵하듯 일획의 유닛들은 그어진다. 발묵한다. 그 농염함 속에 빛을, 빛을 담아낸다.

When a beam of light shined through a window in the corner of his dark studio, the 17th century artist Rembrandt probably shook in awe. From the subtle light beam in the 15000B.C. Paleolithic cave art in Altamira Cave, to Monet who loved light so much to the extent he ran to the glorious sunlight with his canvasses, to the starts that brighten the sky, sunflowers and fields of juniper trees, to Gogh who took fire even to his own face … are not these artworks all part of the history of light?
My art is light. I don’t use light as a means for my light; the light itself is the essence and expression. I don’t try to represent light, but I try to house it.
Human is a light of its own. The humanity—its culture, history, and life—are light.
Light leads, and objects follow.
Recently, I have been using stainless steel. Stainless steel is cold. It is cool-headed. And it is pure. I like the coldness and straightforwardness of the stainless steel. It is urban and modern and intellectual. I use the cold stainless steel in order to convey hotness.
Let’s take a look at the making process. First, I grind and polish the stainless steel. As a result, the steel becomes even more reflective and mirror-like than before. I cut the product into smaller units. I hammer the units. Long and boring time passes. The hard light that have been reflected onto the steel breaks with the loud noises of hammering. The light now is dispersed as it reflects from the hammered steel parts. It’s a dancing time for light. After the long and repetitive process, thousand units of steel are created. The units become pigments of my work. Thousands of cold units join the canvass to take on the illusions of hotness and passion. This moment resembles sunset; this is the moment when material becomes an image. Thus, my work is essentially a painting. When I apply the steel units on my canvass, I feel the euphoria the painter feels when one paints.
