성률(1994년생)은 사라져가는 장면과 머물지 않는 시간을 회화적으로 탐구하는 작가다. 그는 일상 속에서 무심히 지나쳐온 풍경과 감정의 잔여를 붙잡아, 그 순간이 지녔던 온도와 기척을 화면 위에 다시 배치한다. 성률에게 기억은 멀어지는 것이 아니라, 다른 형태로 남아 되돌아오는 존재에 가깝다.
초기에는 일러스트레이션과 그래픽 노블 작업으로 독창적인 서사를 구축했으나, 최근에는 그 관심을 회화적 탐구로 확장해 나가고 있다. 수채화와 아크릴을 주요 매체로 사용하며, 물감의 번짐과 정밀한 붓질이 동시에 작동하는 화면을 만들어낸다. 이 과정에서 우연과 의도가 교차하며, 익숙하지만 설명하기 어려운 감각적 풍경이 드러난다. 관람자는 작품 앞에서 한 장소를 보는 것이 아니라, 한때의 기분·기록·기억을 통과하는 경험을 하게 된다.
성률의 작업에는 빠르게 움직이는 시대에 대한 조용한 응답이 담겨 있다. 많은 것이 즉시 생성되고 곧 사라지는 흐름 속에서, 그는 수채화 특유의 느린 속도와 투명한 물성을 통해 장면의 “머무름”을 회복하려 한다. 물감이 스며드는 과정은 곧 시간의 흐름이자 사라짐의 기록이며, 작가는 그 흔적 속에 우리가 미처 붙잡지 못한 순간들이 존재한다고 말한다.
한국예술종합학교 영상원 애니메이션과를 졸업한 그는 그래픽 노블 『여름 안에서』(문학동네, 2020)로 제16회 일본국제만화상 최우수상을 수상하며 주목받았다. 이후 『Over the Mountain』(쪽프레스, 2020)을 비롯해 다양한 뮤지션(백예린, 이하이 등)의 앨범 커버 아트워크를 통해 대중과의 접점을 넓혔다. 일러스트레이션에서 회화로 영역을 깊게 확장한 그는, 지금도 사라지는 세계의 결을 붙잡아 새로운 감각의 풍경으로 전환하는 작업을 계속하고 있다.
최근에는 회화 작업을 공간과 매체의 경계를 넘어 확장하는 시도 또한 이어가고 있다. 2025년 에르메스와의 협업에서는 런웨이 초대장을 위해 제작한 그림이 미디어 아트로 재구성되어 쇼 공간에 설치되었으며, 이어진 유니클로와의 협업에서는 그의 회화가 도시의 풍경 속으로 스며들며 다양한 매체를 통해 선보였다.

Seong Ryul (b.1994) is a painter who explores fleeting scenes and the elusive nature of time. His work captures traces of everyday life—fragments of mood, atmosphere, and memory that often slip past unnoticed—rearranging them on the canvas with a renewed sense of presence. For Seong, memories do not simply fade; they return in transformed, surprising ways.
Beginning his career in illustration and graphic novels, Seong gradually expanded his practice into painting as a way to deepen his inquiry into perception and remembrance. Working primarily with watercolor and acrylic, he creates surfaces where spontaneous washes and meticulous brushwork coexist. The interplay between chance and intention produces images that feel both familiar and difficult to place—landscapes that evoke not a specific location, but a felt moment, a sensation that lingers.
In an era defined by velocity and constant image production, Seong’s paintings offer a quiet form of resistance. The transparency and slowness inherent in watercolor allow him to record a kind of “slowed time,” preserving scenes that may already have vanished or soon will. As pigment settles and water spreads, the canvas becomes a record of disappearance as well as continuity—an archive of moments we might have forgotten to notice.
Seong studied Animation at the School of Film, TV & Multimedia at the Korea National University of Arts. His graphic novel Into the Summer (Munhakdongne, 2020) received the Grand Prize at the 16th Japan International Manga Award, making him the first Korean artist to earn this distinction. He later published Over the Mountain (Jjok Press, 2020) and has created album cover artwork for widely acclaimed musicians such as Yerin Baek and Lee Hi, expanding his audience both locally and internationally. Having moved fluidly from illustration into painting, Seong continues to trace the subtle residues of disappearing worlds and transform them into contemplative, evocative landscapes.
In recent years, his practice has further extended beyond the canvas, exploring the expansion of painting across space and media. In 2025, a collaboration with Hermès saw his artwork created for a runway invitation reinterpreted as media art and installed within the show space. This was followed by a collaboration with Uniqlo, in which his paintings permeated the urban landscape, appearing across a range of public and digital media.
