권용래는 빛과 금속의 조화를 탐구하며 회화, 조각, 설치의 경계를 넘나드는 작업을 이어온 작가다. 서울대학교와 동 대학원에서 서양화를 전공한 그는 초기에는 전통적인 회화에 집중했으나, 반복된 작업에서 오는 피로와 예기치 않은 작업실 침수 경험을 계기로 새로운 재료와 표현 방식을 모색하게 되었다. 알루미늄 조각, 은박지, 캔 뚜껑 등을 실험한 끝에, 형태의 안정성과 변색에 강한 스테인리스 스틸이라는 재료에 이르렀고, 이를 바탕으로 금속과 빛을 결합한 독창적인 작업 세계를 구축했다. 수백에서 수천 개의 정교한 금속 유닛을 직접 망치로 변형하고 안료를 덧입혀 젯소 처리된 캔버스 위에 한 점씩 부착해가는 그의 방식은 공예적 노동과 회화적 감각이 만나는 지점에서 출발한다. 빛은 단순한 조명이 아닌 작품의 핵심 요소로, 관람자의 시점과 위치에 따라 반사되고 흘러가며, 찰나의 장면이 시간성과 공간성을 획득하고 시적인 리듬을 만들어낸다. 대표작 Eternal Flame은 이러한 빛의 언어를 통해 찰나의 순간을 영원으로 확장시키며, 불꽃처럼 번지고 사라지는 흔적을 통해 현대 미술 속에서 존재와 시간에 대한 시적 질문을 던진다. 권용래는 동아미술상(1992), 중앙미술대전 장려상(1989) 등을 수상하였으며, 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 대구미술관, 울산현대미술관, 홍콩 콴훤핀 미술관, 중국 북경미술관 등에 소장되어 있다. 또한 메리어트 호텔, 삼성서울병원, 스페인의 팔라시오 캔 마르케스 호텔, 상하이 체디 신창 리조트 호텔, 제주 그랜드 하얏트 호텔 등 다양한 공공 및 상업 공간에서도 그의 작품을 만나볼 수 있다.
Kwon Yongrae is an artist whose work transcends the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and installation, exploring the interplay of light and metal through a distinctive visual language. Trained in Western painting at Seoul National University and its graduate school, Kwon began his career in traditional painting. However, physical fatigue from repetitive processes and a flood in his studio led him to seek new materials and methods of expression. After experimenting with various materials such as aluminum scraps, foil, and can lids, he discovered stainless steel—a material that retains its form and resists discoloration. Since then, Kwon has developed a unique process in which hundreds or thousands of meticulously crafted metal units are shaped with a hammer, layered with pigment, and individually affixed to a gessoed canvas. His labor-intensive yet painterly technique resides at the intersection of craft and fine art. In his work, light is not a mere visual effect but a central material element; it reflects and flows across the metal surfaces, creating scenes that shift depending on the viewer’s position and perspective. His signature piece, Eternal Flame, captures fleeting moments of light and expands them into a sense of poetic permanence. Like flames that flicker and vanish yet leave behind a trace, his works offer a sculptural response to existential questions within contemporary art. Kwon has received several major awards, including the Dong-A Art Award (1992) and Honorable Mention at the JoongAng Fine Arts Prize (1989). His works are held in the permanent collections of leading institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), Seoul Museum of Art, Daegu Art Museum, Ulsan Museum of Art, Kwan Hoonpin Art Museum (Hong Kong), and Beijing Art Museum (China). They are also installed in notable public and commercial spaces, including the Marriott Hotel, Samsung Medical Center, Palacio Can Marques Hotel (Spain), The Chedi Xinchang Resort Hotel (Shanghai), and the Grand Hyatt Jeju.

나는 스테인레스 스틸을 사용한다. 스테인리스 스틸은 차 갑다. 냉철하다. 그리고 순수하다. 나는 그 차갑고 단단함 이 좋다. 도시적이며 현대적이고 지적이다. 나는 뜨거움 을 나타내기 위하여 차가운 금속을 사용한다.
스테인레스 스틸 판재를 미러 가공한다. 미러 가공을 통 하여 스테인리스 스틸은 더욱 차가운 평명과 투명함을 지 닌 거울효과를 나타내게 된다. 이것들을 오려내어 유닛을 만든다. 만들어진 유닛을 햄머링한다. 길고 지루한 시간 이 흐른다. 스테인리스 스틸의 표면에 반사되던 단단한 빛들은 햄머링 소리와 함께 깨지고 부서지며 빛을 산란시 키기 시작한다. 드디어 빛이 춤을 추는 순간이다. 끊임없 이 반복되는 순간이다. 지루한 시간을 보내고 서야 비로 소 수천 개의 유닛들이 준비되어 진다. 이렇게 만들어진 스테인리스 스틸 유닛들은 나에게 있어서 하나의 안료이 자 물감 덩어리인 것이다. 수 천 개의 그것들이 하나하나 캔버스 위에 부착되는 순간 차가운 쇠의 성질은 사라지고 뜨겁고 황홀한 일루젼이 된다. 타들어가는 석양이 그렇듯, 물질에서 이미지로 바뀌는 순간이다. 그래서 나의 작품은 본질적으로 회화이다. 스테인리스 스틸 유닛이 하나하나 캔버스에 부착되는 순간, 오랜 시간 잘 갈아진 먹물을 흠 뻑 적신 붓으로 화선지 위에 일획을 그어 내리는 희열을 맛본다. 화선지 위의 먹이 발묵하듯 일획의 유닛들은 그 어진다. 발묵한다. 그 농염함 속에 빛을, 빛을 담아낸다.
작가노트 - 스테인리스 스틸, 그 차가움과 뜨거움
I have been using stainless steel. Stainless steel is cold. It is cool-headed. And it is pure. I like the coldness and straightforwardness of the stainless steel. It is urban and modern and intellectual. I use the cold stainless steel in order to convey hotness.
First, I grind and polish the stainless steel. As a result, the steel becomes even more reflective and mirror-like than before. I cut the product into smaller units. I hammer the units. Long and boring time passes. The hard light that have been reflected onto the steel breaks with the loud noises of hammering. The light now is dispersed as it reflects from the hammered steel parts. It’s a dancing time for light. After the long and repetitive process, thousand units of steel are created. The units become pigments of my work. Thousands of cold units join the canvass to take on the illusions of hotness and passion. This moment resembles sunset; this is the moment when material becomes an image. Thus, my work is essentially a painting. When I apply the steel units on my canvass, I feel the euphoria the painter feels when one paints.
