갤러리조은은 장광범(b.1972)의 개인전《Delete》를 10월 11일부터 11월 5일까지 개최한다. 캔버스에 물감을 겹겹이 쌓아 올리고 다시 깎아 내는 과정을 통해 '시간의 형태'를 작가만의 독창적 조형 언어로 풀어낸다.

파리 에콜 데 보자르(파리 국립 미술학교)의 유서 깊은 건물에서 떨어져 나간 벽 조각 하나를 발견한다. 오랜 시간 마모되고 깎여지며 과거로부터 쌓여 올려진 벽의 단면은 작가에게 시간의 결이자 형태 그 자체였다. 땅이 퇴적하며 지층을 쌓고, 나무가 해를 지나며 나이테를 이루어 가듯, 작가는 캔버스에 물감을 한층 한층 쌓아 올린다.

물감이 충분히 쌓이면, 캔버스 뒷면을 들어 올린 뒤 그라인더를 이용해 물감을 다시 지워내기 시작한다. 이때 지층처럼 쌓인 시간이 원형 유기체 형태로 시각화 되어 캔버스를 뒤덮는다. 율동감을 주는 원형들이 때로는 산 능선으로, 때로는 물의 풍경으로 그 모습을 드러낸다. 마치 대자연이 한순간도 고정되지 않고 변화하는 것처럼, 장광범의 시간 풍경 또한 끊임없이 흐르고 움직인다.

이에 마엘 벨렉(Mael Bellec 파리 세르누치 미술관 학예연구실장)은 유동적인 대자연을 표현하는 동양의 수묵 산수화뿐 아니라 클로드 모네의 ‘수련’(Nymphéas)을 떠올린다. 실제로 작가는 주관적 색채를 강조하는 프랑스 근대 미술 사조에 영향을 받았는데, 상징주의(Symbolisme)와 나비파(Nabis), 혹 인상파(Impressionnisme)의 병치 혼합적 색채 표현을 들 수 있다. 빛에 의해 시시각각 변화하는 다양한 색이 사물의 본질이라 여긴 인상파 화가들처럼, 장광범의 원형 모티브들은 몽환적이고 미묘한 빛깔로 매 순간 그 모습을 드러낸다.

중앙대 미대를 졸업한 작가는 프랑스 파리 8대학에서 미술 이론 석사, 박사 과정을 수료했다. 프랑스를 기반으로 다수의 개인전과 단체전을 통해 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있는 그는 2021년 프랑스 대기업 부이그(Bouygues) 그룹 수장 마틴 부이그(Martin Bouygues) 회장이 100호 한점을 소장하고, 파리 개인전에서 부인 멜리사 부이그(Melissa Bouygues)가 네점을 연달아 소장하며 호재가 이어졌다. 또한 전 세계를 대상으로 한 프랑수와 슈나이더 재단(Fondation François Schneider) 2022 공모전 최종 후보 30인으로 선정되며 국내외 미술계의 뜨거운 관심을 받고 있다.

모네의 '수련'을 연상시키는 대형 물 풍경부터 블루톤의 웅장한 산 시리즈까지 추상과 구상을 넘나드는 19점의 신작을 통해 관객들에게 환상적이고 명상적인 풍경을 선사할 예정이다.

Gallery Joeun is pleased to present "Delete," a solo exhibition by Jang Kwang-Bum, from October 11 to November 5. Through the process of stacking and recutting paint on canvas, the "shape of time" is represented in the artist's original artistic language.

The artist found a piece of wall that had fallen from a historic building of the Paris School of Art (Beaux-Arts de Paris). The cross-section of the wall, long worn, shaved and accumulated from the past, represented for the artist the texture of time and form itself. Just as the ground settles and forms layers, and the trees form rings over the course of the year, so the artist continues to layer the paint on the canvas.

When enough paint has accumulated, he lifts the back of the canvas and begins to remove the paint with a sander. At this point, the time that has accumulated like a layer is visualized in the form of a circular organism covering the canvas. The rhythmic archetypes appear sometimes as mountain ridges, sometimes as water landscapes. Just as nature changes without pause, Jang Kwang-bum's time landscape is constantly in flux and motion.

In this context, Mael Bellec, chief curator of the Cernuschi Museum in Paris, recalls Claude Monet's "Nymphéas" and Oriental ink paintings depicting a flowing nature. In fact, the artist was influenced by modern French art that emphasizes subjective color, including the juxtaposition of Symbolism, Nabis and Impressionism. Like Impressionist painters who believe that the different colors that change according to the incidence of light are the essence of things, Jang Kwang-bum's circular motifs reveal themselves with dreamy and subtle colors at every moment.

Jang Kwang-bum is a graduate of Chung-Ang College of Fine Arts and earned his master's degree and doctorate in art theory from Paris 8 College in France. The artist, who has had several solo and group exhibitions in France, made positive headlines in 2021 when Martin Bouygues, the president of French conglomerate Bouygues, bought the large work and his wife Melissa Bouygues collected four consecutive works in his solo exhibition in Paris. In addition, the work was selected as one of the last 30 candidates for the Fondation François Schneider 2022 and attracted considerable attention in domestic and foreign art circles.

From a large water scene reminiscent of Monet's "Nymphéas" to a magnificent series of mountains in shades of blue, 19 new works combining abstract and figurative elements offer the public a fantastic and meditative landscape.
